When I made the switch from playing only electric guitar to acoustic (and I purchased my Martin D-3R, sadly a discontinued model), I brought it into the guitar shop and had it set up and adjusted for extra-light strings. From day one I've been using these strings. They last a long time and sound great. I also noticed they do not stretch out that much after the initial string change. I'm not sure how these strings would sound on other acoustics but on Martins I don't think you can go wrong.

These sound quite a bit different out of the box than un-coated strings, as if they've already been broken in with a warmer, lower tone, compared to un-coated strings. For me, the sound is a little too dull but others may prefer it. Also the coating on these seems pretty thick and I found them slippery when playing, particularly in the first couple weeks, and especially if you perspire. The only other coated strings I've tried are EXP and I prefer their sound and feel to these.

I'm a professional player here in the Dallas area, and I've used Elixirs since they came out several years ago. They sound great, but the real key is, they retain their sustain and tone MUCH longer than any other strings out there, including other coated strings, like the D'Addario EXPs, which begin to sound dead in about 1/3 the time of Elixirs.

Good strings as long as you're looking for really light-weight/low-tension strings. They have a nice, warm tone that seams to last for about a month or two (pushing it) of regular use. I'm not a professional, but I play my guitar for at least an hour every day and I find that these strings work well and are relatively inexpensive. Have only had one string break on me: It was the third string while I was changing to an open tuning and the old string just couldn't handle increased tension. Usually I replace them before there's any chance of breaking which is a good idea with any strings. Give 'em a shot.

These are good strings for the price but like most things these days, the quality isn't what it used to be. While changing strings, the end of the B string fell right off in the guitar. I was able to repair it and use the string, I was at home, but if I had been at a gig and had to fish around in my guitar body for a string end it would have been a real bummer.

History of Quality and Sound
The first metal guitar strings were invented in the 1920s and revealed to the world in the 1930s. Ever since then, guitarists have not looked back. These guitar strings are made from a Phosphor Bronze alloy that produce a warm balanced sound when properly strung. Each strum and pluck of the Phosphor Bronze string pulls the most sensitive, expressive tone that brings out the very best in guitars.

String Tension 101
Modern music has become so sub-divided and fragmented that there is no longer one turn-key string solution for every playing style or desired sound. At one point in time, there were no standardized string gauges, but John D’Addario Sr. changed all that in 1939 with the introduction of light, medium and heavy gauges for acoustic instruments.

Throughout most of the 20th century, standardized electric and acoustic guitar gauges were sufficient for needs. Occasionally, new gauges (often hybrids of existing sets), were created for specific purposes and string offerings from manufacturers became immense. However, today there are so many popular styles and trends that it is often necessary for players to go outside of standard gauge sets to get the effect they desire. Whether it’s open tunings, drop tunings, baritone guitars, 5-string guitars, 7-string guitars or a variety of other reasons, many players are opting to go their own way and customize their string selection and sound.

Why Do You Need To Know About String Tension?
D’Addario receives hundreds of inquiries each year from players who have questions or problems to solve related to string gauges or tensions. To assist players in determining the appropriate string for their needs, we created the Online String Tension Guide, a complete book of charts for determining the appropriate string to be used in just about any situation. I have been using D'Addario Phosphor Bronze since they came out in 1974. I use nothing else on my 2000 Gibson Advanced Jumbo. These coated strings don't keep the new sound any longer than uncoated EJ-16's.

I own a number of high-end guitars, some of them custom made. All of that fancy wood is great, but probably the single greatest factor in good tone is good strings. They have to be the right strings for a particular instrument and they have to be fairly new. Keeping good strings on a dozen or so instruments gets to be an expensive proposition, and EXPs are pricier than many others, but they last MUCH longer. I play my instruments all the time, but get several months of good tone from a set of these. Unlike other coated strings, the coating never peels off. In fact, you'll never notice they're coated. I use phosphor bronze strings on most of my guitars and I've never seen these EXPs turn green or black or gray like typical bronze strings that are broken in in a week and then wasted within a month. As a 30-year player, I recommend these wholeheartedly.

These exact strings came factory-installed on my Takamine G260 acoustic guitar. The polymer coating on the strings is so slight that I didn't even realize these were coated for a long time. It doesn't really affect the sound, at least to my ears. The coating helps protect the strings from corrosion, so it is a big plus. I also tried the regular phosphor bronze and they are also good. I suppose it's possible that these could slightly mellow the sound by damping ultra-high frequency harmonics, but the coating isn't supposed to be applied to the cracks between the windings, so I doubt it affects the sound at all. If you like super-bright sounding strings, maybe you want regular non-coated, but these are probably the brightest coated strings available. Sound great, have lasted months so far, 5 stars

Tried these on a Laguna acoustic guitar. They are basic standard traditional strings. They sound good, they are light weight. On this guitar they sound a bit too bright. My preference is to use Elixirs, prefer the feel and sound on this guitar (Elixir PolyWeb Acoustic Guitar Strings (Light)).



These strings do not last less time than the Elixirs. Mostly fresh strings sound good on a guitar. Some people like a brand new set before every gig, others will go weeks or months before changing. If you are an every gig person, well the Martin set is probably perfect for you - they are much less expensive than others. Leaving strings in for an extended period - Elixirs or other coated strings are probably a better idea.



There is no such thing as a perfect guitar string for every guitar. The choice is all about your personal preference and the guitar you play. I think the Martins are a very good value in a standard traditional style. So for the price, these are an excellent value.
