"Elixir's Have Become Our Standard" 2010-01-30
By Daniel G. Lebryk
These acoustic strings are used on a Laguna acoustic guitar. They are just the right weight, and just the right amount of flex. We've tried D'Addario, brighter sound (D'Addario Acoustic Guitar Strings Set, EXP 80/20 Lite), and Martin, a little stiff (Martin Strings SP Phosphor Bronze 12.5-55 MSP4150). In the end, these Elixirs sound and feel best on this guitar.

As has been said, there is no perfect guitar string for everyone. The perfect guitar string is the one that feels and sounds right to you on your guitar. For the combination we have, these are outstanding strings.

On the strings lasting longer, that's hard to say. Fresh strings do sound better. It's clear that the wound strings do not corrode like non-coated strings. But I'm not certain these last so much longer. We buy them because they sound good and have the right amount of flex to them - playability. Corrosion or crud on the string isn't the sole factor in changing strings.

 "Eternal strings" 2009-10-24
By R. Oda (La Jolla, CA)
I love the way these strings sound and they last forever. No. They really do.

My acoustic has had the same strings for 2 years. 2 years!! That's absurd. They still sound good, too. In fact, they sound better than they did new because they have lost that tinny "new-string" sound. Now they sound like normal phosphor bronze strings that have been on a guitar for 3 weeks.

I was traveling in Europe with one of my guitars that had a 2-month old set of strings. Somebody plucked a few notes and looked up to exclaim, "new strings"! I kind of laughed to myself. These strings have completely changed what I consider to be a "new" set.

Granted, they are not cheap, so if you break strings a lot it can get expensive. Clearly, I do not break strings a lot, so for me they are awesome.

 "Good strings" 2009-03-17
By Product Auditor
Not much to say here - they are good strings. If you've never used elixirs it may take some time to get used to, but it's definitely worth a try. One of the selling points is that they last longer - they may last a little longer, but hey, strings are supposed to be replaced, so that's not why I buy these. Rather, they sound nice and I'm used to the slippery feel now.

 "It depends..." 2006-06-24
By d-18v (USA)
There's NO SUCH THING as a "best string". From experimenting over the years, I've found that, while I have "old standbys" that will be the first thing I try, often there is a string that is just right for a particular guitar and it varies from guitar to guitar.

Coated strings have become all the rage over the last few years. They're expensive, but they last a lot longer, especially if you have the kind of body chemistry that causes them to corrode quickly. Also, they minimize the amount of finger noise you get if you slide on the strings.

Elixir Polywebs were the first coated string. The coating is much heavier than that of other strings. This produces a much less bright, more muted sound. I have an old koa guitar that is so bright I can't stand it with standard strings. The Elixir Polywebs tone it down to the point where it's perfect.

If you're looking for a darker sound, then Elixir Polywebs are definitely worth a shot. If you want a coated string but prefer the brighter sound of uncoated strings, then you definitely don't want Polywebs.

The 4 stars applies if you want this particular type of sound. If you don't want this sound, you could end up awarding them 1 star.

 "Good little mobile stand" 2010-02-05
By Daniel R. Fuller (Mt. Sterling, IL)
This Guitar stand folds up very small and holds the guitar nicely. Would be easier to knock it off of a small stand like this, but if you don't have problems with kids, or pets or tripping over cords then this work great. I use it when I'm playing away from home because it is easy to pack and take along. It also works great in the music room for easy on and off access.

 "Perfect design" 2009-12-13
By Casual reviewer (NYC)
The product is a compact and sturdy stand that can be folded down to a 1ft long rod. It is light and easy to carry, for those who will travel with this item. There is no assembly required. Foam non-slip padding on all contact points make the stand scratch proof and stable. Your guitar will not slip out of place, and will be held in a mostly upright angle. The hooks will not swing out of place. All in all, this stand has none of the problems described in reviews for other stands sold on Amazon. I cannot recommend this product any more highly.

By ED S. (Whittier, California)
When I bought this, I wanted something that was really scratch proof. This is it! The top quality soft rubber won't rot or stick to your guitar and even the struts that the molded rubber is on has rubber end caps. it opens very wide and I have never knocked it over and I have a stand and guitar next to my sofa 24/7. It also has a knob to lock it in place and it folds down small and fits in a black bag with a 'Fender' logo on it. I now own four of them. Go for it!

"My second attempt at posting this review" 2010-01-14
By Lynn Breaux (New Iberia, LA United States)
I tried to post a review before, but I'm thinking I didn't specify I was over 13, so it didn't go through. I'm 55. I bought two of these on the advice of my equipment supplier, who has never lead me wrong before. He didn't lead me wrong this time either. I've used these on acoustic guitar, backing vocals, spoken word for a radio show, percussion and guitar cabinets. For the money, I've not found anything as versatile. I wouldn't put them everywhere I'd put a SM57, but they are purported to take high spl's well. I just didn't want to break something I use so much. I bought two more as well as a USB version.

 "Good for the money" 2009-12-10
By In H. Joh (Atlanta, GA USA)
This mic does its job. I am giving 5 starts for the value.

Pros:

1) Affordable price

2) Low noise: I was actually quite surprised when I heard my test recording. Even after signal amplification, I do not hear much noise.

Cons:

1) Small gain: Since I use it mainly for instrumental recording, the gain is a bit low for me. From 2 feet away, a series of amplification is a must, but it works out all right due to low noise. I am not sure for vocal works.

2) Weak bass: You won't hear much bass from this.

3) Sound getting lumped: Although being neutral, the sound still comes flat.

Overall, I am impressed with this. My complaints won't go away unless spending ~$1000.

This is a wonderful microphone. I use it to record interviews in the field instead of a shotgun set up. It is more hassle to use because it requires phantom power. But it provides a clean, clear, warm voice print.

I also plan to use it to record my children's musical performances here at home. So for home concerts and for my field work, this mic works for me.

"For the price this is it!" 2009-09-12
By B. King (IDF, France)
I have a couple other condensor mikes with shock mounts in the same price range, but this one is the best. Not sure you can do much better for anywhere near the price. I loaned one to a friend and he immediately returned his mike to the shop for one of these. Nice neutral sound, solid construction, I use it with a tube amp to get some non-linear compression for voice.

"Astonishing sound and value for well under 100 bucks!" 2009-08-23
By D. Lockman (Southern California, United States)
I was especially fortunate and got a new one for around [...]

making this beautiful-sounding vocal mic

a spectacular bargain for the home-recording musician or audio-blogger.

I don't know of any truly-decent large-diaphragm condensers with

the full 1" diaphragm size for under [...] (don't be a sucker for the

super-cheapies that look so big & cool). The AT2020 has a 2/3-inch diaphragm size, but

sounds better & bigger than anything else I have ever heard in the price range.

If you can spend [...]on a wonderful AT2035 or maybe a Studio Projects mic,

then by-all means, do it.

But the AT2020 [...]on all competition under [...], IMO.

I use it with the Studio Projects VTB1 Mic Preamp and the sound is B-I-G.

The AT2020 and the VTB1 are definitely a sweet pair together.

Although, I suspect any decent preamp used properly with the AT2020

would sound pretty darn good.

And DO use a preamp, even if only a $30 Art Tube MP.

Count on buying the 2 items together.

The pre will "send your AT2020 to the gym", by giving it

a thicker, fuller, BETTER sound.

The thing to remember with preamps is to

try to get close to the *loudest possible clean sound*

coming out of the preamp and generate

a BIG signal going IN to the recording device, which should

have its input gain quite LOW (maybe like "2" or even "1").

Watch your clipping/overload levels,

listen for any audible noise or distortion in the recording,

and make adjustments to cut those sound flaws, if they are present.

For vocals,

Experiment with going as loud as you can from the preamp while still sounding CLEAN,

until you find you particular setup's "sweet spot".

"Straight-up" dial-settings is often around where you end up.

The AT2020, used with a decent pre like the one I have (there are many others),

should get you a serious studio vocal sound

with pro-quality clarity and little coloration.

IMO, it's got to be the world champ of under-[...]studio Condenser Mics,

at least right now (in 2009),

until something more miraculous comes along.

And if you are presently recording vocals with

something like an SM58, moving up to the AT2020

with a modest preamp will absolutely blow your mind--Much "bigger" sounding,

with much finer detail, presence and clarity.

I hear this mic is good for miking electric guitar cabs

and various percussion too.

But voice is its forte, I believe.

It's a gem.

 "Too light and uneven" 2007-01-21
By W. Drake Dorosh
I presume these are designed and tested by engineers and there are many variables that may account for my experience. My experience was that EAD the metal wound strings were quiet compared to the clear nylon. I think these lower frequency strings should have more tension or less stretch so they are louder.

The Pro-Arte strings came on my Portugese all solid wood cedar top classical with firm tuning gears. It took several tunings before the the strings settled down. I got it the day after Christmas and it still lost a semi-tone of pitch from last week. I think they finally hold pitch. Their surface is too smooth and slippery to hold a knot. I worried that the strings would snap out of their harnesses. They didn't but perhapes the company can experiment with special texture or rosin on the knotted section of the string to grip saddle and tuning pegs.

One the positive they are very flexible and stretch a mile.

I will play these strings real hard to work in my newly made guitar and later try a set which is the next gauge up.

This is 19 days into breaking in on both strings and guitar. I will edit this if the the strings ware unevenly and will keep them in constant EAD GBE tune until standard tune Egan values have worn into the varnish indicated hopefully by a noticable increase in volume.

 "Not Bad" 2006-11-01
By C. Ehmke (Security, Co United States)
These are very good strings for the price. I was a dissappointed in the sound transition from the nylon to the wire wound nylon. It seems the wire wound are a little too bright and the nylon are maybe too soft. This makes the move from the D to the G string too noticable. But again - the price is right.

These are good strings for the amateur or student classical guitarist. You can't beat the price vs performance. One nice thing about these strings is that they are packaged in an air tight bags filled with an inert gas which inhibits corrosion. So if you buy several sets you won't have to worry about them while they sit in a drawer for months.

"great sound for coated strings" 2009-10-30
By adjective (place)
For coated strings, I haven't found any better-sounding ones than these. Actually, I was kind of shocked when I first put them on my guitar because they sounded as vibrant as some of the non-coated strings I've used. Additionally, I appreciate the new style of packaging D'Addario uses. The strings are bundled together in one thin (admittedly non-recyclable) plastic bag instead of being individually wrapped in paper sleeves. Good stuff. These would be my first choice if I were to be on the road for any length of time without a spare set.

 "Good bag, cheesy logo" 2010-04-13
By Michelle Eason (Columbia, SC USA)
Bag seems to be good quality and the pockets seem adequate for storing books and accessories. I can't say anything bad about the bag itself. My deep bowl Applause seems lost in it, so maybe I should have ordered a different bag. What I do not like about this bag is the juvenile-styled logo on the pocket. Gosh, it is cheese-arific. Don't like it one bit. I'll be covering that with a piece of fabric or a patch very soon. Glad I can sew.

"guitar bag that smells BAD!!" 2010-02-07
By Juliet Barton (vienna, va)
My parents bought this guitar bag for me. When i opened it up out of the plastic, it had an extremly strong SMELL. I thought it was perhaps a manufacturing smell and it would go away in a few days. I put my guitar in it and a few days later I took it out and then my guitar had the smell too. Now a few weeks have gone by and the smell is still on the bag.

I have been trying to air it out, using also dryer sheets, a baking soda odor absorber, and a renuzit odor absorber inside the case, and it still SMELLS. IT smells similar like a combination of MILDEW and MOLD and even a chemical in cat pee. I don't know if this is a fluke, but mine smells really bad.

I bought this a couple weeks ahead of my son's birthday. After he opened it on his birthday, he used it a total of three times, only to carry his guitar to a weekly music lesson, and the zipper started uncoiling from the seams. And now because I purchased it the couple weeks early, it fell just past the 30 day return. Very disappointed in the quality. Our son was careful with it and only used it those three times...it certainly should be more durable than that.

"Good Value for a nice bag!" 2009-09-07
By A. Gehlke (Paradise)
I am a beginner guitarist and own a dreadnaught size Yamaha FS730. I needed a gig bag just so I could carry the guitar to "jam" sessions with some of my friends who play. This bag is such a good deal and fits my guitar perfectly! The bag had good padding, a large zip pocket for my music sheets/booklets and a smaller pocket for my tuner and picks. There's a standard handle at the side, one near the upper back portion and also backpack style straps.

The music store that I bought my guitar from wanted $50 for their bag which has the store name on it. This one is very similar to it construction wise so I would definitely recommend this one for a $15 savings.

 "Good Value" 2010-01-30
By Daniel G. Lebryk
Tried these on a Laguna acoustic guitar. They are basic standard traditional strings. They sound good, they are light weight. On this guitar they sound a bit too bright. My preference is to use Elixirs, prefer the feel and sound on this guitar (Elixir PolyWeb Acoustic Guitar Strings (Light)).

These strings do not last less time than the Elixirs. Mostly fresh strings sound good on a guitar. Some people like a brand new set before every gig, others will go weeks or months before changing. If you are an every gig person, well the Martin set is probably perfect for you - they are much less expensive than others. Leaving strings in for an extended period - Elixirs or other coated strings are probably a better idea.

There is no such thing as a perfect guitar string for every guitar. The choice is all about your personal preference and the guitar you play. I think the Martins are a very good value in a standard traditional style. So for the price, these are an excellent value.
